What Is Sedation Dentistry?

It's scary! We get it. Especially for those patients who are difficult to numb, have had traumatic experiences in the past, or have a lot of dental treatment that needs to be done. Since our goal really is excellent oral health for each patient, Dr. Hamblin and Dr. Jared find it vital to offer patients several types of sedation dentistry.

Dr. Robbie and Dr. Jared are board-certified, making dental work a more comfortable experience for patients. They are also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), so you can feel safe knowing that your sedation dentistry is in capable hands.

Different types of sedation help you cope with your fears surrounding a trip to the dentist. Some types of sedation allow you to stay conscious but feel much more relaxed and at ease, while others put you to sleep entirely. To some degree, being under sedation helps you feel less pain and discomfort.

Before your procedure, we will assess your needs and consider the type of procedure you're getting to select the appropriate type of sedation if it's necessary.

What Dental Procedures Can Involve Sedation?

Dr. Hamblin can tell you whether or not you can get sedation for your upcoming procedure. It's typically an option for:

  • Implant placement
  • Extractions
  • Root canals
  • Any procedure for anyone who is difficult to numb
  • For long procedures involving multiple teeth

Sedation typically isn't available for simple routine dental visits like exams, x-rays, and cleanings unless your anxieties surrounding dentistry are particularly extreme.

What Types of Sedation Dentistry Are Available?

We offer several types of sedation to reduce your anxiety and discomfort during dental work. They include:

IV Sedation

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Robbie Hamblin is highly qualified to provide IV sedation, during which you receive a mild sedative in liquid form through an IV drip. You'll stay conscious but comfortable, and will most likely have a significantly decreased memory of your appointment. It's very common to hear comments such as "Are we done already?" after a two-hour appointment. These medications are very safe and are widely used in outpatient medical settings for same-day surgeries. Dr. Jared is also IV certified after receiving specialized training through his residency completed in June 2022.

Oral Sedation

We offer oral sedatives in pill form that you take about an hour before your appointment to relieve anxiety. It isn't quite as strong and effective as IV sedation, but it's an excellent option for patients who fear needles. Often we will use oral sedation in addition to IV sedation for best effect.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a breathable sedative that calms you and helps block pain signals. One of the great benefits of nitrous is that after the appointment, it is business as usual. By the time your appointment is over, you'll feel completely normal again and can go about your day as usual.

We use nitrous for kids as well––offered at no additional cost––and combined with the TV allows us to do many simple procedures without anesthetic.
