How Does Children's Dentistry Differ from Adult Dentistry?

At Brookside Dental, Dr. Hamblin and his team take extra steps to ensure children are at ease and comfortable while getting dental examinations and procedures.

For young kids, they offer "happy visits" to meet the team and make sure the experience is positive. The happy visits don't involve any work or procedures, but they show your child that going to the dentist is nothing to fear.

Additionally, Dr. Robbie and Dr. Jared provide nitrous oxide at no charge to ease anxious children. Our kid-friendly team introduces themselves and the dental clinic as a safe place that isn't scary. During your child's appointment, they can enjoy watching TV on the overhead monitor.

What Services Are Available for Children's Dentistry?

Your Nampa dentist and our team focus on preventive dental care for children to help them avoid future cavities, gingivitis, and other complications. Services for children include:

Teeth Cleanings

To keep your child's teeth polished and clean, our dental team provides regular cleanings to keep kids happy and comfortable. At your child's cleaning appointments, you can ask questions and get tips for how to maintain their oral health at home.

Dental Sealants

Sealants add an extra barrier between your child's teeth and food, acid, and bacteria that can get stuck in the grooves and cause cavities. Sealants come in the form of a glue-like liquid that your children's dentist paints onto the chewing surfaces of your child's back teeth. It hardens into a strong material that lasts for several years before it needs to be reapplied.

When Should I Bring My Child to the Dentist?

You should start bringing your child to the dentist as soon as you see their first tooth appears as a baby. We currently offer "happy visits" for a quick check-up for babies with new teeth, and we start regularly seeing children around age three or four, or when they're old enough to sit through a teeth cleaning.

Dental visits typically last between 30 to 45 minutes. Depending on your child's age, their dental visit may include a complete examination of their teeth, gums, jaws, bite, and oral tissues to check for proper growth and development.

How Should I Care for My Child's Teeth Between Children's Dentistry Appointments?

Beyond coming in for children's dentistry appointments, there are steps you must take at home to keep your child's teeth healthy and prevent complications. You must:

  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Help them brush thoroughly twice per day.
  • Help them floss at least once per day.
  • Give your child a mouthguard for sports.

If your child complains of a toothache, rinse their mouth with warm salt water, apply a cold compress, and then book a dental appointment as soon as possible.
