What Are Dental Bridges and Crowns?
Dental bridges and crowns are two types of dental appliances that restore your smile to a stronger or more complete state. They work differently and are necessary in different cases, but their preparation and placement are similar because bridges include crowns.
Dental Crowns Restore Your Natural Teeth
Dental crowns are caps that are placed over teeth with compromised strength or structure. They sit over your teeth permanently and are often necessary after you break a tooth, get a root canal, or if you want to improve an unattractive tooth’s appearance.
Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth
Dental bridges include one or two crowns to go over the teeth or a single tooth near a gap. They also include a false tooth to fill the gap after you lose a tooth or have an extraction.
What Should I Expect When Getting a Bridge or Crown?
The procedure for getting crowns and bridges is very similar. It involves two visits to Brookside Dental. At your first visit, we prepare the tooth or teeth that need crowns and take impressions of them. We send the impressions of your teeth to a lab and use them to create your custom dental crown or bridge. We also look at the color of your teeth and find the right shade to use for your final device.
While you wait, we provide you with a temporary dental crown or bridge that isn’t as strong as the permanent one that you may wear until your next appointment.
At the second appointment, we remove the temporary appliance and make sure that the new permanent one fits. Then, we cement it into place and might make some final adjustments to make sure it looks natural.
What Materials Are Available for Dental Bridges and Crowns?
There are several materials available for crowns and bridges that look and feel similar to your natural teeth. Our Nampa dentists offer dental crowns and bridges made with:
Ceramic and Porcelain Crowns
Ceramic and porcelain crowns look nearly identical to your natural teeth and are still quite strong and durable.
Zirconia
Zirconia is an extremely strong ceramic produced from the metal zirconium. Though it’s a tooth-colored material, it doesn’t look quite as natural as other ceramics available. Zirconia dental crowns are a great option for posterior teeth or patients with teeth grinding or clenching habits.
